Mexican electrician Bodegas Alianza made a business leap with PayPal

The Mexican retailer Bodegas Alianza registered a significant growth in its electricity company operations following access to the PayPal payment system. The integration of PayPal has made the Bodegas Alianza ‘ s online channel its highest source of income, and the price of the passenger unit jumped from 900 pesos below the line to 3,500 pesos, indicating that consumers are more inclined to purchase high value on digital platforms.

Luis Gascón, head of the company ‘ s electrician, stressed that PayPal ‘ s protection mechanism provided safeguards for both vendors and buyers, reduced fears arising from fraud and thus optimized the shopping experience. Buyer safeguard mechanisms, on the other hand, have boosted consumer buy confidence, thus contributing to the growth in sales and in the price of a single customer. The Mexican electrician market is undergoing a rapid transformation and the growing popularity of digital wallets such as PayPal and Mercado Pago, especially among young consumers, has contributed to the growth of online consumption. Despite the continued dominance of cash, the convenience and security of digital payments are changing consumer habits, especially in cross-border and high-end commodity transactions.

Mexico ‘ s electricity market is experiencing rapid growth, becoming the second largest in Latin America (after Brazil). In 2023, the Mexican electrician market traded $74 billion, with a combined annual growth rate of 33 per cent projected for 2023 to 2026. Seventy-nine per cent of the electricity trade is carried out through mobile devices, and PayPal, Mercado Pago, which is expected to account for 17 per cent of transactions by 2027, is growing rapidly because of its ease and safety. Despite a clear trend towards digitization, 82 per cent of Mexicans still prefer cash payments, especially in physical retailing. However, the spread of digital wallets is moving consumers away from cash payments to digital payments, especially among young people. With the growth of the BNPL and real-time payment systems (e.g. SPEI, CoDi), diversification of payment patterns will further stimulate electricity consumption, with a market size expected to reach $12.548 billion in 2025.

The rapid growth of Mexico ‘ s electricity market and the diversification of payment patterns (digital wallets, BNPLs, real-time payments) provide more opportunities for businesses, but the risk of cash dependence and fraud remains a challenge. The Bodegas Alianza success story has provided other Mexican retailers with the pole of a digital transformation, and it is expected that digital wallets such as PayPal will continue to contribute to the rise in electricity consumption in the country.
