Plex announced that it would significantly increase the price of its Plex Pass plan’s life-long package. Starting in July, Plex indicated that the lifetime Plex Pass price would increase from $249.99 to $749.99. This is considered to be the ultimate means of official “coercion” of users to the monthly/annual subscription system, following the April 2025 price adjustment (from $199.99 to $249.99).
Plex has admitted in his blog that they were considering the complete abolition of the Plex Pass Life Package service on the grounds that recycle subscription patterns are more stable. “Plex was founded as a film and television lover, and we want to be able to build a good product for the good. Plex offers lifelong subscriptions early on because we know that many clients are willing to pay a high one-time fee for the software used daily.”
“We have in the past considered the elimination of life-long Plex Pass, because revolving subscriptions help us to sustain long-term development, but we know that it remains valuable to many users in the community. We will therefore not cancel it, but will retain it at a price that reflects the true value of the software we are committed to developing and maintaining in the coming years.”
Plex states that there has been no change for the current lifetime Plex Pass subscribers. The price of the annual and monthly packages has not changed. For reference, the following is the current pricing of Plex:
Plex remote viewing pass: $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year
Plex Pass: $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year
Lifelong Plex Pass: $249.99 (to $749.99 on 1 July 2026)
In addition to price adjustments, Plex has published a number of platform improvement plans. Includes offline downloads to support grouping by drama set and automatically downloading new ones; allowing direct creation/editing of playlists on both the mobile and television ends; adding “human voice enhancement” and “sound balance” high-level audio control; gradually transplanting servers that could only be processed at the web end to the original user of the media library management function into the mobile phone App; and the original NFO metadata support compatible with the new IPv6.
Plex indicated that they had been improving their media tools by creating and managing private media collections around users. At the same time, the company stressed the importance they attached to feedback from the community and noted that user insight was key to their future direction.
Plex is currently the world’s most popular personal media centre and private cloud and audio server software. Users are allowed to set up a private “Netflix” or “Spotify” with a computer or a film, TV drama, photo and music in NAS, and to play it on various devices such as mobile phones, television boxes, etc.
