An initial financial performance for the first quarter was published by the game engine giant Unity a day ago. Unity is expected to outperform expectations, with revenues projected to range from $505 million to $508 million, higher than previous projections of $480 million to $490 million. This bright performance is only two years away from the turbulent period of Unity. In 2024, Unity announced a new “operational fee” policy to charge extra fees to developers of games that meet certain installation and income thresholds. The policy provoked strong dissatisfaction among many developers and was withdrawn shortly thereafter, leading to the resignation of then CEO John Lichtiero. In fact, Mega Crit, the developer of this year ‘ s explosion of the Slaughter Point 2, moved the game from Unity to a free, open-source, cross-platform Godot engine, largely because of the Uniity operating fee policy.

Version 6 of Unity was launched to developers in autumn 2024. Matthew Brownberg, who succeeded Richtiero as CEO, said that this was the “relaunching moment” of the company: “We want to be a different and better company. We want to establish new relationships with clients and communities and to develop and deliver products in new ways. And this begins with our thinking and delivery in different ways.”
