The eBay recently announced the establishment of a new research and development centre in Bangalore, India, with a plan to recruit 1,000 engineers over the next three years, focusing on eBay markets and PayPal payments. Meanwhile, eBay decided to close its research and development centre in Netanya, Israel, in the first quarter of 2026, which was established in 2005 and is expected to have over 200 employees unemployed.
According to eBay, this development centre, located in Bangalore, spans two layers and covers a total area of 14,000 square metres, including the staff restaurant. Over the next three years, eBay plans to recruit 1,000 engineers. Establishment of centres of excellence focusing on eBay Marketplaces and PayPal, covering research, platform development, architecture, quality engineering, product management, marketing, product analysis, user experience design and information security. This will further expand the deployment of eBay in India, where the company previously had a development centre in Chennai and an eBay Indian Operations Department in Mumbai.
It is noteworthy that the Centre will focus on the development of generating artificial intelligence. Research suggests that this will be a key driver for eBay user experience. According to the recruitment information published by Rishabh Agarwal, Senior Software Engineering Manager, eBay, the company is promoting the development of relevant technologies through positions such as “Buyer Experience Director of AI Research and Development”. These job descriptions refer explicitly to the development of generation AI, recommended systems and machine learning models.

The eBay Bangalore New Development Centre will join its global development network, which has covered several cities, including San José, Austin, San Francisco, Scottsdale, Omaha, Boston, Timonim, Berlin, Chennai, Singapore, Shanghai, Seattle, Portland, New York and Netanya.
Meanwhile, eBay announced that it would close its research and development centre in Netanya, Israel, in the first quarter of 2026. The Centre, which had been in operation for 20 years, had been established in 2005 but had finally been closed after several staff reductions in the past few years. This closure is expected to result in the unemployment of more than 200 employees, a decision that was officially announced at the end of May 2025.
